Richmond
& Windsor
63km from Sydney
The historic towns of Richmond and Windsor are your two final
destinations on this amazing Grand Circular Drive. You are
now at the Hawkesbury region’s ‘Gateway to the Blue Mountains’.
Governor
Phillip first explored the Hawkesbury in 1789 in an effort
to find suitable farming land to feed the one year old starving
colony in Sydney.
By 1794 Lieutenant Governor Grose reported he had “settled
on the banks of the Hawkesbury 22 settlers who seem much pleased
with their farms”
Just
two years later, some 400 Europeans were living and farming
along the banks of the river, producing much of the food needed
to support the colony.
They
then shipped it on the Hawkesbury to Sydney.
In
1810, Governor Macquarie named the area’s settlements - Richmond,
Windsor, Wilberforce, Pitt Town and Castlereagh - which became
known as the ‘Five Macquarie Towns’.
