Lithgow Valley’s first European settlers arrived in 1824 but
the area did not grow until the railway arrived in 1869. Historic
sites include Lithgow Courthouse (1879), Lithgow Pottery site
in Hassan St, Esbank House (1842) in Bennett St.
This
was built for Thomas Brown who established Lithgow’s coal
industry and who was a magistrate at Hartley Historic Village.
He travelled by horseback to and from Hartley along what is
now called Browns Gap Road. This road gives you access to
the splendid Hassans Walls.
Other
fascinating historic sites are Blast Furnace Park - where
the ruins include huge brick structures, a network of underground
tunnels and the base of Australia’s first blast furnace; Lithgow
Small Arms Factory museum; and Oakey Park and the old brewery.
A
short drive west of Lithgow brings you to the lovely old South
Bowenfels Station near the town's new vistor information centre,
plus Arch Vale Trout Farm at Marrangaroo where you can see
a superb picturesque sandstone viaduct in perfect condition.
