ADRENALIN FOR ADVENTURERS OF ALL AGES AND TASTES For the thousands of folk who like to live on the edge, the Blue Mountains has more edges, canyons, cliffs, peaks and precipes than most other accessible areas of the world. There's an abundance of adrenalin activities as well as numerous more passive pastimes that still give a healthy buzz - for adventurers of all ages.
From hang-gliding to horse-riding, from abseiling to aqua sports and from golf to whitewater rafting, the tastes of most advernture sports enthusiasts are well catered for within the region.
The serious stuff includes: kayaking, whitewater rafting, canoeing, rowing and tandem parachuting - all at the wonderful International Regatta Centre complex at the eastern foot of the Mountains at Penrith. The centre - along with the adjacent Whitewater Rafting Stadium - was a venue for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
There's also abseiling and rock climbing in various National Park areas - particularly Mt York near Mt Victoria; hang-gliding at Mt Blackheath; Canyoning - particularly at Claustral Canyon and Empress Falls; mountain biking wherever you choose and go-karting near Lithgow. For the extremely fit athlete there's the annual Six Foot Track Marathon each March, which sees up to 700 enthusiasts race from the Katoomba's Explorer's Marked Tree to Jenolan Caves.
For the more passive adventurer and sportsperson, there's bushwalking throughout the Mountains (see our Bushwalking Guide with 41 selected walks); heated swimming pools at Springwood and Katoomba and a great outdoor pools at Penrith, Lithgow, Bathurst and Mudgee; tennis courts in most Mountain towns and villages, magnificent golf courses at Penrith, Emu Plains, Springwood, Wentworth Falls, Leura, Katoomba, Blackheath, Bathurst and Mudgee; horse-riding in the Megalong Valley and cycling wherever the whim and the wind takes you.
For burning even less kilojoules but still having a memorable adventure - there are all the exciting rides at Katoomba's Scenic World, including the superb new Skyway over the Jamision Valley; the amazing Sceniscender which travels down to the valley floor and the famous Mountain Devil Scenic Railway, which is the world's steepest incline railway, guaranteed to give you a shudder.
Tours are a tremendous adventure at the spectacular Jenolan Caves where independent caving adventures are also available there.
If you love the water, you can go speedboating at both ends of the Mountains - at Penrith on the Nepean River and at picturesque Lake Lyell, some 900m above sea level; plus there's sailing at Lake Wallace on the edge of Lithgow.
On the subject of water, the world's most popular sport of fishing is well attended to; at Penrith's International Regatta Centre; at the lovely Oberon Dam and also in Lake Lyell where the trout are big and willing - all in season of course.
Wonderland's Adventure Clients Take a spooky ghost tour if you dare. Blue Mountains Mystery Tours runs the only ghost tour operating in the Blue Mountains with access to unique areas. The tour is conducted by Paranormal Pete, who has extensive knowledge of hauntings, myths, legends and psychic phenomena in the area. Experience one of the half-day or mystery tours with a mix of sightseeing, thrills, history and breath-taking scenery. Werriberri Trail Rides cater for all ages and skills and offers a famous Pub Ride. For the kids, Megalong Valley Farm offers endless fun with the ATV Quad mini track rides. They have helmets just like the big guys and the course is adventurous yet safe with plenty of straw bales as safety guards. Megalong Valley Farm also offers a tremendous range of horse rides. At the foot of the mountains Whitewater Rafting Penrith invites you to experience the excitement of 21st century rafting at its best on a purpose built whitewater course. All the fun takes place under the friendly guidance of highly trained river guides, with self guided rafting also available. |
