Crossing The Range

The Blue Mountains form part of the Great Dividing Range running down Australia’s east coast. It proved a formidable barrier to the first explorers, whose pioneer heritage is in evidence everywhere. Today, it’s an easy journey across the Mountains and into the great interior, where the first region you’ll come to is the ‘central west’. Bathurst, Mudgee and the absorbing pioneer town of Gulgong form this region’s hub and many smaller localities like Hill End and Sofala retain striking links with Australia’s colonial past. Tiny Tannabutta Cemetery and St Mary’s bushland church in Ilford, both on the Mudgee road, offer tantalizing glimpses of earlier times. Bathurst lives and breathes heritage and exquisite colonial architecture; and Mudgee’s organic produce, fine vineyards and warm welcome will delight you. Australia’s Blue Mountains is the ideal place to begin your venture inland!
